I have a HP JetDirectEX model J2382B. Check the firmware revision of this
card,
(press the TEST button on the box), earlier revision levels do not
understand
'lpd', mine is 'B.00.01' which does not. Check with HP Support (or look on
their
WEB pages) whether the revision you have can handle 'lpd'. If you are
unlucky
like me and it does not understand 'lpd' then you have 2 options:

1) Get a Flash-ROM for the box (i think it is J2547A or J2547B) then get the
Latest Firmware and down load this into it. To download firmware I think you
need the JetAdmin software - this is not available for Digital Unix, but if
you have a SUN machine or HP machine you can use this to do it.

2) Print using 'telnet' to the box. This is what I have done, I managed to
get
software code which is part of the JetAdmin software to do this using the
print spooler on Digital Unix. The only problem is when you use this
technique
you can not use 'lpq' to see what is been printed. Each print job executes
a print deamon which tries connecting to the JetDirect box and waits untill
it can print.

If option 1 fixes your problem, thats the better way to go, if not then I
can
give you my solution for option 2.

When you have rm & rp set, if, of xf & friends are no-ops; you only
need to set lp, sd and mx. All filtering is done at the other end.

> *And the lpq command returns the following output :-
> *>> omc_pg4:Mon May 27 08:40:12 1996 : waiting for mrpline to come up
when you get this message there are 2 possibilities:
1) the printer mrpline is not accessable (no ip address or ip lookup fails)
   Does it respond to ping?
2) your jetdirect card is one without lpd support (old cards didn't have
   this feature). Try:
telnet mrpline 515
It should respond:
Trying <mrpline ip-address>...
Connected to mrpline.
Escape character is '^]'.
/usr/lib/lpd: : Malformed from address
Connection closed by foreign host.

If it says something like 'connection refused' then lpd is not running on
that printer. If it takes a long timie and you get a timeout message,
then either your name doesn't match your ip-address (i.e. mrpline) or your
printer doesn't have an ip address or you have a networking problem.

The following is the original question :-

Hi,

In our environment we have a DEC AlphaServer 2000 4/233 and most of our
printers are HP LaserJet and HP line printer. The problem we have is we
configured two HP LaserJet 4MV connected to the network thru internal
JetDirect cards, model J2552A, and they all print okay. Below is the
printcap entry for one of the printers :-

>>ishp4mv|lp0|ishp4mv:\
>> :af=/usr/adm/ishp4mv.acct:\
>> :fc#0177777:\
>> :fs#023:\
>> :if=/usr/lbin/ps_level2of:\
>> :lf=/usr/adm/ishp4mv.elog:\
>> :lp=:\
>> :mx#0:\
>> :of=/usr/lbin/ps_level2of:\
>> :pl#66:\
>> :pw#80:\
>> :rm=ishp4mv:\
>> :rp=text:\
>> :rw:\
>> :sd=/usr/spool/ishp4mv:\
>> :sh:\
>> :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:

And the lpq command returns the following output :-
>> omc_pg4:Thu May 23 14:29:37 1996 :
>> JetDirect lpd: no entries

Now the problem is when we configured another two HP printers (one is a HP
LaserJet 4M and the other is a HP 2562c line printer) connected to the
network thru external JetDirect adapters, model J2382B, both are unable to
print. Below is the printcap entry for the HP Line Printer :-

>>mrpline|lp1|mrpline:\
>> :af=/usr/adm/mrpline.acct:\
>> :if=/usr/lbin/lpf:\
>> :lf=/usr/adm/mrpline.elog:\
>> :lp=:\
>> :mx#0:\
>> :of=/usr/lbin/lpf:\
>> :pl#66:\
>> :pw#80:\
>> :rm=mrpline:\
>> :rp=text:\
>> :rw:\
>> :sd=/usr/spool/mrpline:\
>> :sh:\
>> :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:

And the lpq command returns the following output :-
>> omc_pg4:Mon May 27 08:40:12 1996 : waiting for mrpline to come up

Both these printers are also configured to print from our HP9000 and our
Novell machines and they print okay. From what we can see is that the
internal JetDirect cards seem to work fine, but the external adapters seems
to have problem communicating with the server (this is shown thru the lpq
command). Our local technical support for both DEC and HP have not been much
help in solving this problem. So any help in solving this problem will be
much appreciated.

Thank you.
