SUMMARY: RAID-5 Questions

A week back I asked a few questions about DEC's RAID technoly, here's
what I've got:
 - Performance: As one would expect, normal read performance and
not-so-good write performance. Seems nobody has made any numerical tests.

 - Configurable: no go. Gyula Szokoly said "If you play it by the book, no",
so maybe there are some tricks ??? I've heard about RAID-5 subsystems
which can calculate parity for a new disk 'on the fly'.

 - 3rd party disks: A few were using Seagate 9G drives, so it seems possible.

The reason I want to use AdvFS is configurability and performance. I
want to keep all my files in one AdvFS domain (to keep it configurable),
but this is quite a vulnerable setup, as the complete setup has to be
reloaded if one disk crashes.

As the RAID-5 setup seems to take away the good things about AdvFS, I
think I'll pick LSM and mirroring instead.
