Q: Serial port control

osf managers:
To start, I am not an system manager, I am a developer, and in
addition, I am fairly new to DU. So if this is a silly or innapropriate
question, forgive me.
I am trying to control a serial device (a bar code reader) using
ioctl calls. The man pages for dc, iscc and scc imply that I can use
/dev/tty00 and /devtty01 to access the serial ports. However, when I
open either of those devices and use ioctl to change the port setttings
it seems to affect my own terminal (e.g. if I turn off echo, characters
aren't echoed back when I type in my terminal). I noticed that according
to my system configuration file I am using the "ace" controller on the
serial ports, not dc, iscc nor scc. Do I need to use a different
controller to actually access a serial device? Also note that I don't
actually have the device connected to the port yet. Could that be part
of my problem?
Any help will be much appreciated, and of course, I will summarize.

Thanks in advance,
Mike
