My summary is a tad belated, as I have been out of the office for the past
week. I received two responses on my query, one from Randy Hayman and another
from Joel Cayman -- both of which were appreciated.
The problem was that if I "pause" a session from the DXSession manager and
subsequently mistype my password, I can no longer unlock the session by
correctly entering my password. Randy pointed out that a patch is available
from DEC for the problem, and both he and Joel mention that entering the root
password will work-around the problem. (As an aside, in checking the
work-around, I discovered that dxpause will not accept a password longer than
about 15-characters -- so if you've got C2 enabled, you might want to use some
care in choosing the length of your password if you also plan to use dxpause!)
I don't know whether either or both of these problems exist with version 4.
Randy enclosed the "readme" for the patch, which I am enclosing below.

===============================================================================
The files dxpause and DXpause.uid (v3.2C version) in this directory contains
the fix for case UVO103622, where dxpause prevented users from logging back
into a "paused" session, after typing in an incorrect password.
To install the fix:
1. Replace the new files for the old ones on the target machine, e.g.
cp ./dxpause /usr/bin/X11/dxpause
cp ./DXpause.uid /usr/lib/X11/uid/DXpause.uid
2. Be root and change dxpause's permission and owner so that C2 protected
password database can be accessed for password verification, e.g.
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/X11/dxpause
chown root /usr/bin/X11/dxpause
