My original question is at the bottom of this message. Thanks to
Doug Gould, Clifford Krieger and Dave Golden for responding. With
their help I was able to boot to maintenance mode from the CD-ROM (I
could not boot to single user mode from the >>> prompt), mount my
/ and /usr disk partitions and see all the files I expect to see. So
my disk isnt totally trashed. It turns out I still had free hardware
support so DEC sent someone out to check my hardware. He wasn't
particularly useful. To make a long story short he spent a whole
afternoon here, including an hour on the phone with a software support
guy and he didn't figure out anything more than what I did. The
software guy's suggestion was to reload DU, even though I have data on
the current drive that is not backed up and that I need! When I
suggested installing a new hard drive, installing DU on it, mounting
the old drive and recovering the data from it, the hardware guy looked
at me like I was going to pull a rabbit out of a hat! Everyone in my
office (none of them DU users) all say that makes perfect sense. So
I can do this right? Or am I trying to do magic? We beleive we can
go buy any standard SCSI hard drive and install it. True or no?
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. One of the responders suggested that since I was plugging in a
16-bit card, to a half-sized (8-bit) slot, I may have had unterminated
leads which could cause some problems somewhere.
-------------------- My Original post ------------------------------
Hello managers:
To start I'm running DU 3.2d on an Alphastation 200 4/100. Other
info is available if needed. I am in the process of developing a
device driver for an ISA bus card. My problem occurred during my first
attempt to install the card. I ran isacfg from the >>> prompt as follows:
isacfg -slot 0 -dev 6 -mk -etyp 1 -enadev 1 -irq0 10 -iobase0 3b0 -totdev 7
Running isacfg -all showed that my reconfiguration seemed correct. I then
ran init. I then powered down the machine and plugged in the card. After
power up I ran >>> boot. It seemed to come up okay with the following
messages:

isa0 at pci0
gpc0 at isa0

Here it gets stuck. Nothing else ever happens. I tried cycling power
and unconfiguring the card with isacfg, and boot acted the same. I
removed the card from the slot, same thing. So now I'm back to what
I think is square one, but I can't boot my machine.
A few notes:
1. Since my driver is a loadable one, I did not rebuild the kernel. I
was planning on using sysconfig to load my "bare bones" first crack
at the driver. Perhaps this was part of my problem, trying to boot the
system with a board in it that had no driver loaded. Of course I would
think that unconfiguring and removing the card would solve the problem.
2. I had put the card in the bottom ISA slot. I later read that the
bottom ISA slot only takes half-sized ISA cards.
Although our free Digital support has expired, I am stuck until I get this
fixed, so I may be forced to buy support. Any help I could get before then
would be much appreciated. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
