SUMMARY: DU4.0 Upgrade broke teTeX

Hi all --

In a previous message I observed that upgrading to DU4.0 ``broke''
the teTeX installation, causing segfaults on previously functioning
executables, including tex and latex.

Dan Riley (dsr_at_lns598.lns.cornell.edu) located the problem in the
kpathsea hashing routines as compiled by the GNU C compiler gcc.
Arranging for kpathsea to be compiled by DEC's C compiler made this
problem go away for Dan, and for me as well. Some minor surgery on the
Makefile and a header file, and things compiled well...

However, in case anyone is tempted to try this themselves:

Further progress was complicated by the fact that the latex sources in
the teTeX-0.3.3 distribution are now just about a year old, and
apparently they TELL you so in interactive error messages (!) when
they're processed, and it looks as if that is somehow messing up the
Makefile's install procedure. Ack.

A new teTeX distribution (0.3.4) became available today, containing the new
LaTeX, and my next step is to try that...

-- University of New Hampshire | upgrade to Ultrix 4.2a. (But that would
-- pas_at_unh.edu | require rebooting.)
