inn expire slowness

Configuration: Digital Unix 3.2D
                Alpha 2100
                ASE 1.3
                HSZ40
                inn1.4 unoff-4

My news system seems to have a problem in regards to taking a long time
to expire; specifically, the 'fastrm' process seems to take upwards of
12 hours to run and has taken nearly 30 hours at times.

The configuration is as above. The news disk is a UFS type RAID 5
sitting on the HSZ40. It is 8GB (5 RZ28M-VA split accross 3 BA350
shelves).

Has anyone seen this before? I searched the archives, but didn't find
anything.
