downgrading firmware

I seem to have shot myself in the foot by upgrading an
alphaserver 1000 to firmware 3.1 before I'm ready to
upgrade to DUnix 4.0.

My question is can I roll back to the old version of
the firmware?

The firmware release notes mention that one shouldn't do that
but its not clear if they mean just don't load a version of
the firmware that doesn't support your os version (duh, like I
just did), or that thou shalt not downgrade?

any authoritative answers?
