We are faced with the age old problem of cleaning up a large passwd file
mess. We currently have 30+ servers ranging in size from a i386 SCO
communications processor to a Alpha 8200 Enterprise Server. The problem
is what is the best way to keep system files in sync accross a diverse
group of platforms.
We have finally stopped creating willy nilly uname/uid matches accross
our environment by requiring all new accounts register with an Excel
Spreadsheet before creation. But this does not help us create and
administer accounts centrally.
I long to use the NIS system but I do not know of anyone else using it
in a commercial environment except for CAD station administrators. Is
anyone out there using NIS in a shop with 10+ unix servers supporting
100+ users.
Also, is anyone making use of DCE services in-house to achieve
single-signon for in-house designed applications. Another area I am
looking into is pushing our developers to implement a centrally
administered security system that support distributed computing.
Look forward to any response I may receive. I will summarize this
information and post if I get anything juicy.
