cpio compatibility

Hi

Has anyone experienced compatibility problems with the DU cpio command?.
Actually, we're in the process of migrating from an System V AT&T
platform to DU. The problem is that we need to move historical data
stored on around 200 QIC tapes, backed up with cpio. Trying to get the
tape information back to the AT&T works fine, which led us to think that
we have not a physical media problem. But, while trying to bring the
data to the DU ( 3.2C ), the cpio gives us a "non cpio file" message.

After that, we tried to use the old cpio version which comes in
/usr/opt/sterling/sbin, but we get the same result. Using the head
command with the tape, we've seen the header of the file, and we know
that the cpio header generated on the AT&T machine is slightly different
from the one that DU cpio expects.

We've used almost all the switches, in almost any combination, but
nothing good happens, we've also tried to modify the executable cpio
with some C programs, with the same frustrating results.

I think that this shouldn't be the first AT&T ---> Alpha DU migration
which involves cpio files. We've thought about the use of GNU cpio, but
in the meantime, i would like to know of any previous experience from
you.

Any workarounds, welcome. I'll summarize

Thanks in advance
