Login Problem - Bizarre

I am sure there is an easy solution to this problem but I can't get
my head around it...

I am running a Digital Alpha 2000 with about 700 users on Digital
Unix 3.2c

I have created a user called CHRISTINA with a password. As you would
normally create a user *smile*

It refuses to log her in, you get 'login incorrect' error. But doing
an su - CHRISTINA from the system I can enter her password and her ID
works just fine. What is going on? It looks fine in the /etc/passwd
and /etc/group file and works fine doing an 'su'

Puzzled

Thanks for your time
