All I can suggest is to define the two tape units to NSR. Then setup two
volume
pools linking each to a tape unit. Run two backup groups each night one to
each
pools specifying the filesystems which will fit on each tape.

You may be able to configure NSR to run the backups in parallel
instead of serially. This may split a single backup between the
two tapes, but NSR has been designed to keep track of where
a file really is to make it easy to restore.

I think that DEC is wrong. I have two drives too. I have one tz877
auto loader and one tz87 single tape drive. My system has no problem using
both drives for backups. The only thing I had to do was to make sure that
the device was listed in the devices portion of the window on nwadmin, and
to have already mounted a tape prior to leaving for the night. You did use
the non-rewinding device when you defined it, right?

I have no solution for you but try these two useful resources for NSR
users,
in case you don't already know:

Has lots of info about Networker. The Technical Bulletins on clients and
bugs should make interesting reading.

Don't know if you have your answer yet or not, but I just went through this
and am kinda familiar.
BOTH devices must be active on the system. If they are, the way that NSR
will work is to copy to BOTH tape drives in parallel; not to one and then
the other.
To have them go in parallel, under 'Server' 'Server Setup' you need to have
the active devices set to 2 and the 'Parallelism' needs to be the sum of
'devices' and 'session's per device' (ie: 2 devices * 4 sessions = 8
parallelism).
Hopefully this is what you're after.

NSR will be able to use both devices if:
- both devices are configured in the DEVICES list.
- both devices contain LABELED and MOUNTED tapes.
- no restriction to a specific device was made to GROUPS , POOLS or
CLIENTS
I am not sure what happens if you use Networker Single Server ... still
I believe this should work as well.

One way to do this is to configure two pools and point one pool
to external DAT and second pool to internal DAT.
For example you can have instead of "Default" pool
o "System" pool with / and /usr savesets
o "Data" pool with /data savesets
or something like that

Under Server->Server Setup on the networker gui, what do you have `active
devices' set to?
Try setting the active devices to `2', and then mounting appendable tapes
from the correct volume pool in each of the drives before the backup starts.
This will likely cause Networker to use both devices at the same time,
splitting the data between the drives. This may not be what you want.
Read up on the `parallelism', `active devices', and `sessions per device'
in the administrator's guide.

I read your message on Digital's web page regarding using two tape
drives with NSR. It's my understanding that you can specify that NSR
should use one tape drive and then another when the first is full. But I
was told (By DEC) that you can specify that NSR should use both tape
drives to perform a backup job and NSR will split the data across two
drives. I hope that works because we are planning to do that exact thing
here. Our backups jobs are taking too long, and I want to split my backup
across multiple tape drives and have NSR use both drives simultaneously.
That solves your problem, because you won't have to change tapes
(you've doubled your capacity) and it solves my problem by doubling the
throughput (halving the backup time). If you have tried this and it does
not work as advertised, please let me know. I'm about to invest a lot of
money in this solution. Thanks in advance,

Below is my original question :-
