chk_bf_quota?

since i've upgraded to DU 4.0, i get these messages appearing in
syslog every once in a while for all our alphas:

Aug 6 08:16:44 shelby vmunix: chk_bf_quota: user/group underflow

i don't have quotas activated on any of the filesystems. what does
this message mean?
