TERM=? for a SUN workstation

Greetings managers,
        I have a user who has a sun workstation and when he telnets
        to the DU 4.0 box from his local "xterm" window, he cannot
        do any "sane" editing? We tried setting the TERM to *always works*
        "vt100" and then "vi" a file. But the editor still complains and
        he cannot traverse the file, the top lines are scrolled above
        the visible region.
        Any suggestions? ideas?
