My original post was:
Hello
We are evaluating some X terminal emulation software to use in our
research center. We currently use 2 DEC 3000/AXP workstations with DEC
UNIX version V3.2 214 alpha.
I downloaded Xappeal and did an installation. After that, I tried to
connect to one of the Workstations. I get the console login screen, but
after issue my name and password, I receive the message "Cannot start
session manager from remote client -- access denied".
We are using another X terminal emulator, X-Win32, from StarNet. This is
a Windows software, to run under Winsock. With this software, we do not
have the above problem.
Following some instructions found into the alpha osf managers mailing
list archive, I modified the following files:
/var/X11/xdm/Xservers: added a line containing
apolo:0 foreign
(apolo is the name of my PC, it is NOT an HP workstation :-)
/var/X11/xdm/xdm-config: included the lines
DisplayManager.authorize: true
DisplayManager.authName: XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
DisplayManager.setup: /usr/var/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0
DisplayManager.startup: /usr/var/X11/xdm/GiveConsole
DisplayManager.reset: /usr/var/X11/xdm/TakeConsole

I received many responses from Elio Tondo (X Appeal Support). He even
sent an activation key to remove the demo limitations. I made an other
try, installing an older version ox Xappeal (1.4.2) from my old SimTel mirror
CD-ROM. It ran OK. The only disavantage was that the mouse buttoms bacame
reversed.
Elio tondo answered:

I re-installed from scratch, to double-check for an installation problem
but this did not solve the problem.
My "solution" was a little bit different:
1. I used na utility called FIPS to reduce the DOS partition and
let 36MB free at the end of the winchester.
2. I installed Linux, using a 12MB swap space, a 24MB root
partition and mounting the /usr by NFS, using a directory into
one of the Alphas.
3. Configured Xwindows and started to use it.
I no longer use X Appeal. My conclusion was: if I need Xwindows, why not
use the true one? Now I have not only X, but a true unix system running at
the PCs. I created a custom root image file and installed it in the
Alpha's usr partition. So I can install linux into any PC from network
using just 3 diskettes - one for DOS/FIPS and two for the Linux boot and
installation.
BTW, I think Xppeal is a good software and I believe it will be the right
choice for many people.
