RESTORING ROOT DRIVE?

     Hello all:
     
     I was wondering if anyone had done this before or had an idea how to
     do it? We have a DEC Alpha 2100 4/275 running Dig. Unix 3.2c.
     
     How would you restore a root file system? I mean restoring the root
     filesystem from an OS cd-rom?
     
     
     Whats the best way to backup root filesystem. We can use dump, but, is
     it a effective measure?
