I got an answer from Tood Acheson and will look at Kerberos. I got
other answers but it inolved the use of ssh and were not really user
friendly.

Kerberos (and DCE) can do this.
Kerberos is available from MIT.
I don't have the pointer at hand, but believe it is in
the archives.
