why so high collision rate?

Hello,

I have 4 machines. Two are dec 3000, two alpha 255mhz.

the 3000 has ln0 and the alpha has tu0 type of network card.

I calculated the collision rate using

netstat -i

col rate = col/(ipkts + opkts)

rate on 3000 = 5%
        255 = 20%

Same ethernet segment-same synoptics 2813 hub as a matter of fact.
same subnet, same switch. One switch as a matter of fact-Synoptics
28115 with 2Gbits/sec aggreate internal bandwidth.

One problem I have is NFS timeouts and bad performance on the 255.
I think this is where I should start fixing it.

network---
traffic utilization when measurements were done: 281KB/sec
maximum utilization observed : 1.2MB/sec
broadcast : 2 or 3

Please help!

Thanks in advance.
