bootp to upgrade firmware

A while ago, someone else asked about hints for using bootp to upgrade
the firmware on an alpha. He didn't get any responses, or have any luck,
so I wanted to try again:

I have a DEC 3000-800, I downloaded m500_v6_7.btp from ftp.digital.com
(using binary mode) to a bootp server on my network. My Alpha sees the
bootp server, and begins to get the image, but ends up with the generic
'84' error.

Any hints, suggestions?
