SO and RAID array

Hello managers,

In a previous summary (adding disks to sw320 raid array) it was said:

- RAID array must not used for operating system.

- Edward C. Bailey said: "... We normally put six drives in a shelf, and
mirror the first two for the O/S and RAID 5 the rest...". It sounds like
a good idea!.

The questions are:

1. Must RAID array not be used for operating system, or RAID 5 only?

2. O/S needs about 100MB of disk space so, what about not used space in
the O/S disk/s? In a 2GB disk we would have 1.9GB free (3.8GB if
mirror).

3. The free space would be used for swap, for usr or for var but, what
about performace and data security?

The answers can be tedious, but very much interesting I hope.

Pardon for my bad english and thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Carlos.
