The question:
=================================================
Hi
I just had a big problem with the electrical system, and my alpha just
went down. At reboot, i'm trying to login to the computer, but as soon
as i give the right passwd, i have the following message:"can't obtain
database info on this terminal", and returns the login prompt.

Any ideas?
TIA

The fast response from this list is that the problem is C2 related, and
looks to be "normal". The problem is with /etc/auth/system/ttys and
/etc/auth/system/devassign. These files are periodically updated by the
O.S. Richard Jackson says that this is a well-known problem and is
addressed on DU 4.0 by allowing the site to disable the updates, also
this update method adds a delay to the login process. There are not
officially existing patches for pre-4.0 DU.
The possible workaround is to have copies of these files on root
partition, and so, boot to single-user mode and just copy them to the
right place.p.e.: copy /etc/auth/system/ttys to /etc/auth/system/ttys.ok
and /etc/auth/system/devassign to /etc/auth/system/devassign.ok. If some
problem occurs, just boot to single-user and copy the files in the other
way.
