One group here just spent a nice little bundle on an a couple
of HSJ's running redundant RAID controllers with 32 Mb of cache.
These are used by the VAX/VMS system over CI (cluster interface).
Now (surprise surprise) the customer wants to UPGRADE to an Alpha 4100
running DEC UNIX, and he wants to reuse the HSJ subsystems. DEC now
says our 1 - month old HSJ's are not useable because they use CI, we
must move to HSZ's and use SCSI.
Anyone ever run into this problem? Are there any solutions besides
buying new HSZ's and swapping the RAID controllers into it (and eating 30k)?
While I wasn't the person responsible for purchasing the sub-system,
I can't believe DEC is still selling mondo $$ proprietary solutions
without warning that there is no alternative upgrade path. Of course,
any decent analyst would have addressed this before ordering, but ....
Thanks in advance, will summarize,
Melvin Smith
