printcap problem

This summer we've got an Alpha Server. I've tried to move some
printcap entries from our Ultrix machines to the Alpha Server, but
here I can't get it to work.

What we vere doing on the Ultrix machine was to use a self-made
filters, which translated danish characters from Dec multinational to
CP-850 and send the print to a remote printer ( on a novell server )

the entry in the printcap file was:

113-direct:\
   :ct=remote\
   :lp=:\
   :lf=/usr/adm/113-direct.err:\
   :rm=novell1:\
   :rp=113:\
   :sd=/usr/spool/113-direct:
113-c:\
    :if=/usr/local/pcl5 -c17 | lpr -P113-direct:\
    :af=/usr/adm/113.ac:\
    :lf:/usr/adm/113.err:\
    :lp=/dev/null:\
    :sd=/usr/spool/113:

the file /usr/local/pcl5 is the filter which also is capable of
receiving a paramter telling which font to use and to send the
respective escape code to the printer. This works fine on the Ultrix
system. I suspect that it might be the pipe in the "if" field.which
is causing the problem. By why is there this difference.
