TTY-to-modem hangups, relation to CPU load

Hi all,

We're running DU 3.2F on a twin-CPU 4100 with a large number of
interactive users. We have a terminal-server based modem pool
with older 14.4k Zoom modems (this is being phased out soon).

Our problem is that sometimes (i.e. several times per day) users
on the modem pool disconnect and leave behind hung shell
processes that sit and suck up CPU time. We can identify them
easily because they've taken >1.50 secs. of CPU and are running
constantly rather than sleeping.

2 Questions:

1) does anyone have an idea how we can set our TTYs to prevent
this and hang themselves up automagically?

2) are there any settings we can make to minimize the impact of this
situation when it happens? It seems that 3-4 of these processes will
double or quadruple the load on the system.

Many thanks,
