I'm getting the aforementioned error whenever I try to log in to root now.
Yes, root.
This is on Digital UNIX 4.0 on a 3000/400, C2 security.
It's numunsuclog field, according to getauth root, was 2. maxtries was 100.
The lock field was unlocked (e.g. u_lock_at_).
WTFO? [that stands for What The ....., Over?]
I've reset the numunsuclog field to 0, and made maxtries 0. I still can't
get in. Where the bejeevers is this error coming from??? What check is
failing? The only check I can find is in the prpasswd (4) man page:
u_numunsuclog
This field contains a number indicating the number of unsuccess-
ful login attempts to the account. This field is reset when a
successful login to the account occurs. If a login is attempted
during the time period from u_unsuclog to u_unsuclog plus
u_unlock, and u_numunsuclog is not less than u_maxtries, the login
is refused. (This check is suppressed if the u_maxtries field is
set to zero.)
[I'm doing all these changes in singleuser mode, of course; it's awfully hard
to fix root when you need to log in as root]
I have not looked at the /tcb/files/auth/r/root file, because that all seems
to have been superceded by the auth.db file(s), regardless of what the man
page for prpasswd says.
