I have received many replies to my request for info about HP
LaserJet 4M+ printing. The basic problem is that if two jobs are queued
back-to-back (but not on the same command line) the second one
is frequently lost. The printer is used on an ethernet network using
TCP/IP protocol.
Solutions:
(1)Commercial products. THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT, IT IS FYI YOU
SHOULD RESEARCH THESE COMPANIES IF INTERESTED. Emulex apparently makes
a substitute for the HP JetDirect card called NetJet. Cost is about
US$400. I was contacted directly by a company called Open Systems
Management which sells software management tools under the marketing
name COSMOS. Another user suggested that the appletalk interface on
the JetDirect is quite robust and installing cap(?) and the packet
filter kernel module would allow appletalk spooling. The guy I talked
to at DEC said another user had no trouble with a card made by NCD.
(2)Another kind soul has will be sending his personal software solution. He is quite busy at this time, however when he follows up I'll see if
I can get it working here. Perhaps this may be distributed later with
the author's permission.
As an aside, one person reported that things worked fine until the
3.2-->4.0 upgrade, at which point the problem occurred. People on
other platforms (Sun and HP (obviously I guess)) reported that things
worked OK.
I also had trouble with parallel interface printing. I apologize for not checking the archives for this one. Remove the "rw" line from
printcap and it goes. More on this later. -pat
