Subject: Weird MX under DU4.0
hello:
I have, what I think, is a strange dns/mx problem under Digital Unix 4.0. I
have two records set up in /etc/namedb/hosts for MX:
IN MX 10 josephus.furph.com.
IN MX 100 mail.meritnet.com.
josephus.furph.com is then mapped to an ip later on the file. the other
record is just there for future (tomorrow) use and has no a record.
josephus.furph.com is also
the name of the machine as seen in /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.config. And it is
the dns server, under the name arpha.furph.com, which is also an A record
with the same ip address.
Here is the strange part. Do a nslookup and set q=mx. I get three, repeatable
answers, which are these (with comment):
> set querytype=MX
> furph.com
Server: arpha.furph.com
Address: 192.168.0.160
furph.com preference = 100, mail exchanger = mail.meritnet.com
*** wrong mail exchange record
furph.com canonical name = www.furph.com
furph.com nameserver = arpha.furph.com
arpha.furph.com internet address = 192.168.0.160
> furph.com
Server: arpha.furph.com
Address: 192.168.0.160
furph.com canonical name = www.furph.com
furph.com nameserver = arpha.furph.com
arpha.furph.com internet address = 192.168.0.160
*** no mail exchange record
> furph.com
Server: arpha.furph.com
Address: 192.168.0.160
furph.com preference = 10, mail exchanger = josephus.furph.com
furph.com preference = 100, mail exchanger = mail.meritnet.com
furph.com canonical name = www.furph.com
furph.com nameserver = arpha.furph.com
josephus.furph.com internet address = 192.168.0.160
arpha.furph.com internet address = 192.168.0.160
*** correct information. and then, what follows, is the same cycle
*** again.
> set querytype=MX
> furph.com
Server: arpha.furph.com
Address: 192.168.0.160
furph.com preference = 100, mail exchanger = mail.meritnet.com
furph.com canonical name = www.furph.com
furph.com nameserver = arpha.furph.com
arpha.furph.com internet address = 192.168.0.160
So what is the scoop? It doesn't matter what domain I search on and all
the a records/cnames/and reverse maps are working just fine. Please email
back and I will post the summary
thanks
beckers
