Lots of replies to this one, so I won't include the
usual roll of honour. Nevertheless thanks to all who
replied.

slogin is part of secure shell (ssh) package made by
Tatu Ylonen, Helsinki University, Finland.

It'a secure connection program intended as a drop-in replacement
for rlogin/rsh. Ssh provides encrypted communications, as well
as public-key host authentication to avoid the IP
spoofing pitfalls of rlogin.

The README for 1.2 states:

'Ssh (Secure Shell) is a program to securely log into another computer
over an insecure network, to execute commands in a remote machine, and
to move files from one machine to another. Its features include the
following:

o Strong authentication. Closes several security holes (e.g., IP,
routing, and DNS spoofing and listening for passwords from the
network). New authentication methods: .rhosts together with
RSA based host authentication, and pure RSA authentication'

It runs on digital UNIX 3.x and I therefore presume 4.x too
although it may need some tweaking to build.

Looks popular in Finland!
