Informix SE 7.1 leaves defunct processes

Hello,

I am using Informix-SE 7.1 on Digital Unix 3.2C.
Whenever I connect to the database then close the connection,
Informix leaves behind a defunct process:

craig 24045 23347 0.0 - ?? 0:00.00 <defunct>

Now, after many database accesses, there are too many defunct processes
lying around and I have to shut down the database server process then restart.
This is not a good thing.

What am I doing wrong, and how can I correct it?
