runaway process

Hi Managers...

OSF Unix 3.2D-1 running on a Dec 1000 alpha server.

Quick question, is there any other way to terminate a runaway process?

The only other way I'm aware of is to terminate everyone with a shutdown
otherwise the runaway keeps going till we do a shutdown.

I have tried Kill -9 <<process number>> but that does not eliminate the
process all together. It becomes Defunct, using valuable cpu time.

Can anyone offer a solution?

Thanks Much
Dennis
