I got a quick couuple of replies back which sent me on the way
towards getting this working. Maybe i can get back to my hotel
room before 1am after all :-)
A good place to put in your bookmarks is
http://www.rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de/mailing-lists/
which has archives of various mailing lists. (i just plain forgot
where osf-managers was archived)

I found i had to comment out an include ctypes.h in Regex.cc and
g++ is now compiling again.
Note that there's a couple of posts in there that mention "stype.h"
(obviously a typo) as well as a place you can get a replacement rx.h
from (which no longer has this file).
Just to comment on what Tim said about his 4.0 observations, *yes*
the disk management is *extremely* frustating. (my blood pressure
rises just thinking about the time i've wasted on it). I've yet
to work out how to successfully build a custom partition table using
it, and always go back to disklabel and ed.. at least ed works. yay.
I'd fixed up acl.h for ssh, but a find didn't find any mkdev.h, so
i'm waiting to see if 1.2.16 will fix this (other people have compiled
it on 4.0, so..)
