NFS writes slow on alpha 3.2d

Hi,
I'm using nfs between my pc and an alpha running osf 3.2d. If I
transfer a 1mb file from alpha to PC, it takes 5secs. Transferring the
same file back to alpha takes 45secs!! While the transfer is taking
place, the disk grinds like nobody's business. It's as if the alpha is
not buffering the writes at all.

Any idea what could be wrong?
