ORACLE on DU tuning tips anyone ?

I would like to optimize memory usage by my oracle instances under Digital
UNIX 3.2D. I want to increase the SGA to the maximum without impacting the
OS (I don't want the OS to start swapping all around and slow to a crawl). I
have 256Mb of memory and alpha servers 2100. I run ADvfs, Polycenter
scheduler and Oracle 7.2.3. My users also use Pro*C and we have to sort very
big files from time to time.

I would like to know:

   - How can I evaluate the actual memory requirements of my system. How much
memory is it using right now. I want to monitor this on a lenght of time and
determine the MAX usage it got. I have top and monitor, but I would like to
know how to interpret the results. For example, I know that the VFS takes
all the momory it can and releases it to the OS if need be, but hos do I
calculate the MAX memory I can have when all the buffers are relinquised to
the OS.
   - If I ever increase the SGA too much, I would like to know how to
determine if my system is actually paging too much.

I know it's a very general question, but I would only like you to point me
in the right direction so I don't have to drown in a sea of documentation...

                                        TIA !
