NIS-Server-Problems: yppasswd doesn't work anymore

Hi to all,

The problem:

yppasswd doesn't work any longer (though the old NIS-password is
definetly correct):

fornix_at_mailer ~ >yppasswd
Changing NIS password for fornix
Old NIS password:
New password:
Retype new password:
couldn't change passwd
fornix_at_mailer ~ >exit

root_at_mailer /etc/yp # yppasswd fornix
Old NIS password:
New password:
Retype new password:
couldn't change passwd
root_at_mailer /etc/yp #

Our environment:
Master Server OSF 3.2c
Slave 1 OSF 3.2c
Slave 2 OSF 4.0
(I have restarted NIS-services on all servers, but no change)

any help appreciated.
