My original post was:
Dear experts,
we have two DEC alpha 3000-300AXP machines and an HPlj4m
as well as a DEC LN03 Plus printer which we want to connect
to the serial ports of the alphas. Do we need to buy special
cables from DEC or is a standard serial cable sufficient to
get things working. I have heard about an IO readback device
for the HPlj4m, but do not remember from where I got the info
and do not know what it does, why it exists, and where to get
it from, if necessary.
Thanks a lot,
Matthias

We use serial cables here I believe..although you will find serial
speeds painfully slow.

We have connected an LN03 Scriptprinter (LN03 Postscript) with
a standard DB25-DB25 serial cable (withe all 25 pins points to
points) at our DEC Alpha 3000-300X (Dec OSF/1 V3.2A).
We have no problem.

I can't speak specifically to the lj4M, but if it is like earler
LaserJets (and DeskJets, ThinkJets, etc.), you will need one of
these two to connect your printer to a serial port:
(a) A 9pin(F)->25pin(M) serial cable (use a modem cable with all
of the control lines), and a Null-Modem (with full hardware
handshaking).
(b) Any of the relativly cheap PC/AT->HPLaserJet cables you can
find from computer stores. I've been using one I picked up at
the local Fry's to drive my ThinkJet (hey, it was free) from
my AS255. If you cant find one localy, here is the information
from the cable bag:
Cable Connection
Los Gatos, CA
408-395-6700
PN# ALP-9210
10' PC/AT To: HP LaserJets (HP Plotters & Compatables)
DB9 Female to DB25 Male
Hope this helps,
Tom
