printer on RS232 serial port - printcap problems

Dear gurus (I wish I was one!),

I am having some problems with the setup of an LN03 Plus
laserprinter to the serial port of our 3000/300AXP and I am
actually really embarrassed to ask this, since it does not seem
to be a problem for anybody else (_at_ least I could not find anything
in the list).

There seems to be some kind of info missing for me to understand
what is going on during the setup. I have a couple of questions
regarding the setup procedure:

Here is what I have done and what I would like to have done:

-- I use a serial line on the printer, e.g. the RS232 port.

=> in the printcap file: ct=dev
   => lp=/dev/tty01
                    etc.

This is more or less what I get when I run lprsetup to the best of my
knowledge.

How do I know it is /dev/tty01? Why not /dev/tty00 etc?
What is the device special file which is supposed to be created? I assume
this has something to do with linking /dev/tty01 to the RS232 port.
And what is /dev/printer good for if not for a local connection?

My printcap looks like this:
-----------------------------------------------
lp|lp0|0|ln03|:\
        :br#4800:\
        :ct=dev:\
        :fc#0177777:\
        :fs#03:\
        :if=/usr/lbin/ln03of:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lperr:\
        :lp=/dev/tty01:\
        :mx#0:\
        :of=/usr/lbin/ln03of:\
        :pl#66:\
        :pw#80:\
        :rw:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd:\
        :xc#0177777:\
        :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:\
        :xs#044000:
----------------------------------------------

As a result I get:

lpc> stat
lp:
printer is on device '/dev/tty01' speed 4800
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        2 entries in spool area
        Tue Oct 22 10:58:29 1996:
lpc>

and nothing happens.

Please give me some insight into this procedure. Is there a good book out
which has a chapter about ttys and other types of devices which might
clarify my questions and update my knowledge?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Matthias
