Dear Managers,

i look for a tool or script, which will run in background the whole time and
will tell me, when a printer does't do for what it was made - printing.

our current configuration is:

[machine A] -network- [machine B] -network- [Printer lps17b]
[machine C] -network- [machine B] -network- [Printer HPIVsi]

where machine B is the Printserver-machine (DECUnix) for lps17b and HPIVsi

for example, on machine A, i see with: lpq -Plps17b

lps17b: printing Job 285 (file #1) for user_at_host to PrintServer "lps17b" (lps17b.xxxxxx)
Rank Pri Owner Job Files Total Size
active 0 xxx 285 golfer.ps 25499 bytes
1st 0 xxx 149 /home/xxx/Mail/inbox/26 1318 bytes

but this is, what i see for about 30 minutes or longer -> something is wrong
with this printer: no paper, paper jam....

or if i see the message: Attempting to print over 10 minutes (configurable??).

I wish the background-Process will send me a message or mail that there is a
problem. The solution i will do.

There are some other network printer, for example: HPIVsi, which are getting
never stalled, all what i see is: Attempting to print.... or other messages on
my machine, because the Printer-server machine is another Unix-machine and not
directly connected to my machine.

I thougt, Polycenter System Watchdog will help me, but the only Message the
Watchdog like, is when a printer is stalled.
Other messages, Watchdog didn't release, that something is wrong.

Am i alone with this problem?

                        Thanks in advance, H. Baumgartner
