Can 'top' or 'ps aux' give strange results ?

I'm trying to determine which programs/processes use the most memory on my
servers in an Oracle 7, DU 3.2D environment.

To do so, I'm using the 'top' utility (V3.3) and also, I used the ps command.

Top gives me strange results, for example, it tells me that the VSZ for a
Pro*C program that connects to Oracle is 56Mb and that it's RES size is 27 Mb!

Can this be true ? 27 Mb seems BIG, provided I only have 256Mb RAM (Oracle
using 40-50Mb of it) and I will sometime have to run 4-5 of those Pro*C
programs at the same time. Can anyone confirm such BIG numbers to me ?

Also, why is it that for the DBWR process, top gives me a RSZ size of 24M
and ps gives me a number of '234' (For some strange reasons, ps does not
show K or M units for this particular program, other processes show K or M
after the digits...)

Oracle SQL*Net connections also seems to suck a big amount of memory. If I
have 10-15 connections using a VSZ of 56Mb, is the code "shared" accross all
connections os do they REALLY all use 56Mb of VM ?

                                        TIA !
