It is possible to crash unpatched Digital UNIX systems from Windows 95
systems by using the Windows 95 command:

ping -l 65510 digital.unix.hostname

The argument to -l can vary between 65508 and 65527 and still cause
crashes.

Do I need the patch under DU 3.2D ?

Yes; even Digital UNIX 4.0A is susceptible.

what does it fix ?

It prevents Digital UNIX systems from crashing when they receive
these oversized ICMP packets.

Where can I get it ?

You can get the patches from:

ftp://atlanta.service.digital.com/pub/mandatory_upgrades/AXP/OSF1

There are subdirectories for the various Digital UNIX versions and tar
files in each directory containing the kernel objects you need to
replace. You will need to compile a new kernel using those kernel
objects and reboot the system in order for the patches to take effect.

all ping patches are available via:

ftp://atlanta.service.digital.com/pub/mandatory/AXP/OSF1/<version>/<filename>
