This is really not a question on DU per se, but rather about DEC's "try
before you buy" program. I have a user who is interested in purchasing a
new machine. Colleagues are trying to persuade him to consider an IBM
RS6000 machine (for selfish reasons), but the user requires number crunching
power. We have tested his code on a dual processor 150MHz Sparc, an older
IBM RS/6000 and on a new IBM RS/6000 (20% better than the older one; I don't
know which model RS6000 it was), and on our Alpha Server with a 233MHz chip.
The Alpha is by far the fastest, twice as fast and twice as cheap!
He is interested in the highest performance available. I haven't kept up
the developments on the Alpha, but I understand there is already a 500MHz
chip. I also vaguely remember there used to be a try before you buy program
at some other institution. They made their machines available for testing.
Does any one know of such a program? I have contacted my local DEC office,
but as usual response is sluggish.
Thanks!
