Hello,
I am considering buying a 9GB Seagate 3.5" format disk to be
used as an external disk with on an AlphaStation 255 4/233
running Digital Unix. I'd be very interested in hearing from
anyone who has these disks in user.
In the past I purchased a 1GB Barracuda which was a 7200rpm
disk and it overheated, so that sometimes when I tried to
do a reboot, the system wouldn't reboot until I'd applied
external fans and left the system off for 1/2 hour. So I'm
concerned about heating issues with the 9GB disks. If you
have one of these and it is external, I'd be interested in
what enclosures you have and any specs on them.
The other alternative is the 5.25" format, but some have said
that manufacture of these is being cut back in favor of the smaller
format disks. Also, some vendors are telling me that the
old "hot swap" deals are being supported pretty well the
first few years (out of 5), but then they become "lukewarm"
because if there are no new disks to be sent out as replacements,
vendors will send the disks back to the manufacturer for repair
and you may not get it back for some weeks. So that means buying
newer disks gives more life to the typical "advanced replacement"
("hot swap") deal. Or one needs to find a better "hot swap"
deal from a vendor which has a track record, or be confident in
the disk and enclosure (power supply, fan, air flow design).
Thanks for any suggestions. I will summarize.
