Using lpr filters to print "to a file"

Hello,

For some reason, one of our programmers asked if it was possible to print a
text file (standard ISO8859P1 document) trough a PS filter with lpr.

I know I can set a PS printer with lprsetup but how can I arrange to use lpr
in such a way as to get a "Postscript file" instead of "paper" ?

Also, is there such a thing as a GENERIC postscript level 2 filter ? For
example, I would like to be able to send the produced files to various
postscript printers and have them print it correctly. I know there are some
subtle differences between vendor's implementations of the PS language, but
for my particular case, there should be no problem.

                                        TIA !
