Sorry for the late summary:
My original question was:
at the moment we're using OSF3.2c on all machines except one, which now
runs OSF4.0. As I saw in other mails, there is OSF3.2g and OSF4.0a
shipped.
To which version shall we upgrade at the moment?
What are the advanteges/problems of the actual version?
I got several answers, thanks to all who helped!
Just two of them:

3.2G and 4.0A are only bug-fix releases for 3.2c and 4.0 resp.
If you are running 3.2C and don't need the 4.0 functionality you
could upgrade from 3.2C to 3.2G. If you need the 4.0 functionality
you should upgrade 3.2c to 4.0.
If you already have 4.0 you should upgrade to 4.0A
Note that you only have the following possible paths
3.2c -> 3.2g -> 4.0A
3.2c -> 4.0 -> 4.0A
3.2g -> 4.0a
you cannot upgrad from 3.2c directly to 4.0A nor from 3.2G to 4.0
3.2g will only be shipping until december 96, there will be no more
version of 3.2
