Hello! Normal users are unable to run "batch" (or "at") jobs on one of our
AlphaStations. We have four of them, which are all running Digital Unix
3.2c. The one with the problem gives the message
at: can't open job file for you
when you try use "batch" or "at". We have checked all the obvious things:
there are no at.allow or cron.allow files, and the at.deny and cron.deny
files exist and are empty. Conditions appear to be the same on all the
machines. The root account on the affected machine _can_ run "batch" and
"at" jobs, so we believe that it is an issue of permissions. But we cannot
find any permissions that are different for the relevant files on the
various machines. There must be some other permission for some other file
or directory that we are not aware of that needs to be changed.
One possible hint (at least to someone else it might seem like a hint): In
previous times, it was possible to run batch jobs on this machine, but at
some point it became impossible. We have not been able to exactly pin down
when that point in time was. The only time that makes any sense was an
occasion when the machine refused to reboot anymore and we re-loaded the
operating system (among other things we did) to try to diagnose the problem
(it turned out to be a hardware failure). But the loading of the operating
system was done in the same way as the first time (as far as we know), so
we are not sure if this is relevant.
Any suggestions are GREATLY welcomed.
yours,
Steve Pate
