Thanks to all who answered (one of the best tip was to search in the
archives for alpha-osf-managers_at_ornl.gov).
There was definitely no typo and a \ at the end of shorter lines doesn't
help in this case.
The solution is that there is a line-length limit of 1024 characters for
the ndbm of NIS.

while back) is to create a second group (i.e. entbio1) with the SAME
group ID and continue populating the second group. When the system does
a GID lookup it will match the first entry it finds (the original entbio
group) for things like printing group names on ls listings.
So now my src-file for group looks like:
entbio:*:1002:,ebg2,ebg1,pebu,seb,baxi,jekla,joho,ciossek,stene,anjaz,slawek,jz,roessel,claudia,
entbio2:*:1002:,guesteb2,yi,mafu,stlu,gang,slipper,neil,yk,ding,irina,gcg,ken,reott,sicr,hausen,mal,walkie,schla
and it seems to work.
kind regards,
