After reading all the posts in the list re: the ping patch I found this page

The problem is not only with ping, it can come from any tcp, udp (and a few
more) types of packets.
Those of you who have not gotten the patch because you were blocking ping at
the firewall and felt safe should really get it and patch it. As the author
of the page puts it "The press have finally got wind of this, so expect
trouble. (Arrgh! The spotty 13 year old wannabe hackers are coming...)"
The patch is available from that site as well as DEC's.
