Hi managers,
Recently I said that some public domain programs won't run under DU 4.0x if
it had been compiled in DU 3.2x. I got responses from the following kind
persons:
David Metsky metsky_at_zk3.dec.com
Dave Cherkus cherkus_at_UniMaster.COM
Alan Rollow alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
I believed Alan's response explains it:
>When using supported, documented interfaces, Digital UNIX
>engineering typically guarantees forwards compatibility
>between versions. Programs compiled back on DEC OSF/1
>V1.2 will still run on V4.0 and everything in the future.
>
>Programs that depend on device driver features that engineering
>has no control over, or programs that depend on internel kernel
>data structures may not work from version to version.
So far I found gcc-2.7.2, cxterm-5.0 needed to be recompiled.
I suppose they are not using documented interfaces. By the way,
how do I know if I am using documented interfaces, those that
have manual pages?
Thanks again.
