Dr. Tom Blinn pretty much sums it up best but Alan offers a glimmer of hope
for those running the latest versions (see below), which not the case for
us.

We purchased the drive from a third party vendor (Great Lakes, I believe)
and either we failed to mention that we are using the RAID controller or
they didn't think to ask. I wasn't the one placing the order.

Thanks for all the replies! (see below for the replies)

Why are you assuming that it's supported? There is no support in Digital
UNIX for attaching a SCSI tape device to the SWXCR style RAID controller.

Older versions of the HSZ firmware don't support tapes. I
think V30Z was the first to do so. Digital UNIX may not
supports tapes on the other side of an HSZ, though I think
V4.0 does. You'll probably be hard pressed to get MAKEDEV
to create special device files for a non-LUN 0 tape, even
        if you can add it.

If you have all the right versions of everything, I think
you can add a tape as:

add tape name bus target lun

        or:

add passthrough name bus target lun

Then to associate a logical unit with the device:

                add unit name tape

        Example:

                add tape TAPE240 2 4 0
                add unit T300 TAPE240

If you have to use PASSTHROUGH instead of TAPE you may need
to use P for the unit letter instead of T.

I don't think tape devices are supported on swxcr controllers. At
least it didn't work when I accidentally hooked my tape drive to one of the
channels... :-)

Does not work as far as I know. RAID controllers only control disks.
For the tape drive you need a normal SCSI card (cheap one..).

Bill,
You don't say which raid storage solution you are using.
The HSZ40's will host a tape as a passthru device. This
feature was introduced at hsz40 fw rev 2.7. The swxcr
raid controller will not host a tape drive.

It was my understanding that you could not add anything but disk drives to
the swxcr Controller. I don't even see a prompt, or set of prompts, in the
swxcrmgr to enable a Tape Drive to be added. Physical and Logical Disk Groups
are the only devices that the swxcrmgr currently allows to be configured.
This has been my experience in the many configurations I have performed. It
would be interesting, however, to see the feedback received from other people
who answer your submission.

Merv Weis

Bill,
I do not know which of the RAID controllers you are using, but I know the
EISA version only supports disk drives. I also read that HSZ40 also only
supports disks.
