Upgrading from DU3.2G to DU4.0A.......

Here's a question for the brave souls who have upgraded DU rather than
doing a full install.

I'll skip to the good stuff, though suffice it to say the required
3.2c to 32.g upgrade was a problem also.

I put in the 4.0a CD and ran /sbin/installupdate. The install script
worked for 10-15 minutes (I didn't sit and time it) and told me
I needed 120 Megabytes more free space in root.

OK Sez me, and I moved some stuff out and cleared up 14 Meg. I ran install
again.

After 10-15 minutes, install stops and says, you need 4 more Meg in root.

I gave it 8. Rerun install. 10 minutes. You need 2 Meg and so on and so on.

I didn't keep track, but everytime I gave it more space that it asked for
and I think I iterated through this loop 6 or 7 times before I finally
(with root at 53% of capacity) got the install to go.

I do not understand why the install program/script whatever it is
does not just figure out what it needs and be done with it. Between
finding space and running the install we're taking about 20 minute
an iteration. And why does Digital insist on making the root partition
so small in the first place? I mean disks are cheap. Make the thing
big enough to allow for future OS growth.

Has anyone else gone through this?
