Hi. I asked this question in late November, sorry for the late summary, but
as you'll see, there wasn't much to summarize.
Here is the question I asked.
***********************
Someone recently asked about broadcasting mail out to all users, and one of
the responses was one that I had some trouble with, and haven't had time to
troubleshoot thoroughly. I thought someone else may have seen it.
The reply was:
>1. Use the bulletin feature of the qpopper POP3 daemon (available from
>ftp.qualcomm.com).
I am using said verion of qpopper (2.2 with DU 4.0), and have compiled it
for Bulletin support. I should say here that I am using the Bulletin
Database feature, as this machine only has POP3 email accounts on it.
There are no home directories or shells for the clients. When I send a
bulletin out, if there is no email in the users incoming mail file, the
POP3 client generates an error. If you email the person in question, so
that there is a message in the incoming file, the bulletin and message
are then properly downloaded without problems.
So, has anyone else run into this?
************************
I got a few responses, but no one seems to be using the bulletin database
on their Alphas. :(
Two respondants told me that there had to be a home directory, but with
the bulletin database, that is no longer true. No home directory is
needed. The bulletin delivery info is kept in the database.
I'll do some more testing on this problem, but I probably won't get around
to it until this summer. So, to the one fellow that asked me to share
any information I received on using the database, I'll let you know this
summer what I find out. If anyone else is using the bulletin database in
a situation similar to the above description, please let me know how you
got it to work properly.
Thanks again.
Chris
